The existing house presented a number of structural challenges. Two original fireplaces and their chimneys were removed while the structure above remained fully supported, allowing new works to proceed without compromising the building.

Along the site boundary, existing masonry walls required temporary propping as demolition and excavation progressed, with works carefully sequenced to protect both the home and neighbouring properties.

The original bluestone footings, laid more than 120 years ago, were retained wherever possible rather than replaced. These were integrated with new reinforced concrete plinths, preserving part of the building's original structure while strengthening it for the future.

Original decorative plasterwork, cornices and fretwork were also repaired and restored throughout the Victorian residence.

A comprehensive drainage system was installed to reduce stormwater entering the property from the rear laneway, while mechanical subfloor ventilation improved airflow beneath the existing home.

More than a century of accumulated dust and debris was removed from the ceiling cavities before restoration works were completed.

An internal landscaped courtyard forms part of the new extension, bringing landscape into the contemporary living spaces.

The courtyard was completed during construction to overcome future access limitations once the building was enclosed — requiring landscaping to become part of the construction sequence rather than a final addition.

Designed by Jane Cameron Architects, Bluestone House combines the careful restoration of a Victorian residence in East Melbourne with a contemporary brick addition.

The new extension complements rather than competes with the original home, with brickwork and herringbone timber flooring anchoring the contemporary spaces.

Today, the transition between the original bluestone footings and new reinforced concrete plinths is almost impossible to find — both carrying the same home, more than a century apart.
