Our Story

Gili is an architectural building company based on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. We build a selected number of carefully considered homes each year in the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne and Byron Bay. Our approach is grounded in more than two decades of experience, but equally shaped by a desire to keep learning, questioning and improving.

Who we are, where we came from, and what drives us.

The way we build reflects the drive and principles of our founder, Rob Gili. It's an approach that started with carpentry and has been refined with every project since. With the Mornington Peninsula as his own family's home, the homes we build here sit in the place his kids are growing up.

It means questioning why something is built a certain way, why one material is chosen over another, and whether there's a better way to do it.

That way of working doesn't stay with one person. It's carried by the team and the trades on every site. You see it in thinking before acting, protecting someone else's finished work and considering the person who comes after you.

Rob remains directly involved in every home we build. He works alongside architects, trades and clients, and holds every detail to the same measure from the first drawing to the final finish.

    Built From Craft.

    Gili began with carpentry. That foundation still shapes the way we think about building, an appreciation for materials, an understanding of how things come together and a respect for the knowledge that comes from mastering a craft. As our projects have become larger and more complex, that connection to making has remained.

    For us, care is a way of working. Thinking before acting. Protecting someone else's finished work. Resolving a detail rather than accepting something that's nearly right. Considering how a material will look not just at handover, but years from now. It applies equally to the architecture, the construction and the people involved in creating it.

    We want to build homes that are beautiful to live with, perform well, weather honestly and become better with age. Homes our team and collaborators are proud to have made. And ultimately, a body of work that our children, and hopefully theirs, can look back on with pride. That's what we're building toward.

Gili Construction Capabilities

  • New architecturally designed residences with a high level of architectural, structural and material detail.

  • Major alterations and additions, including heritage homes, complex existing structures and highly constrained sites.

  • Buildability reviews, preliminary costing, construction methodology, programming, trade consultation and design coordination.

  • Experience resolving detailed interfaces between structure, building envelope, interiors, services, landscape and bespoke architectural elements.

  • Experience with airtightness, high-performance windows, building wraps, ventilation, moisture management, thermal performance and natural and low-toxicity materials.

  • Extensive experience working with timber, natural stone, brick, concrete, steel, architectural cladding, glazing and bespoke finishes —understanding that how a material ages says more about its quality than the day it’s handed over.
